A day in the life of a courier

praca kurier

Everything you wanted to know about the work of a courier.

According to the latest figures reported by Wirtualne Media, as many as 84% of Poles shop online at least once a week. There is no doubt that online shopping is very popular, and this trend is getting stronger and stronger thanks to non-trading Sundays. As far as delivery methods are concerned, nothing has changed - we still prefer courier delivery (with Paczkomaty in second place, of course!), which is supposed to be the fastest and most convenient.

Courier job - wanted/needed!

With the growth of the e-commerce market, the demand for couriers on the labour market is also increasing. Contrary to what is generally thought, this is a very responsible and demanding profession. The ideal courier should have excellent organisation - from arranging parcels in the car according to a planned route (which significantly helps to save time and avoid nerve-wracking searches for parcels), to a thorough topographical knowledge of the area served. Thanks to these two key skills, a good courier is able to cope even with a large region and, at the same time, maintain a high quality of service even when the volume of parcels far exceeds its standard volume (e.g. during Black Friday or the Christmas peak period). Poise, the ability to work under time pressure and the ability to defuse disputes are also useful
in dealing with demanding customers. Anyone wishing to become a courier However, he must bear in mind that the job is not just about getting the parcel from A to B - the most important thing is the customer's satisfaction with the service provided.

What is needed in a courier's job?

Of course, the basic requirement is to have an active driving licence and your own car (preferably a BUS type) and to be ready to set up your own business. The courier candidate should also be familiar, at least to a basic degree, with the use of tablets or mobile devices, as these are among the basic equipment of a logistics company employee, with which they can account for their parcels.

We already know what qualities the ideal courier should have and what is needed in their job. But what exactly does a courier's job look like? Using our company as an example, we will try to show you his typical day.

Branch and field operations

The courier service starts early in the morning, usually around 6.30am, but each branch may have its own individual morning briefing schedule. The briefing is conducted by the manager or coordinator of the courier service. He or she checks that each courier has turned up for work punctually, that he or she is wearing their company uniform and ID badge, and that each vehicle is clean before leaving on the road. Such attention to detail may seem excessive, but let's not forget that the courier is the business card of the entire company, and the first impression he or she makes on customers is crucial to whether they will choose to use the company again.

The next stage is to help sort the consignments. This is an opportunity to notice and report any damage, to check whether any parcels are misallocated to a particular area or, conversely, whether there are some that have not been allocated to any. Then it is time to stack the parcels in the car and finally you can leave the branch.

Work in an area starts with the distribution of parcels. It usually takes several weeks for a courier to become very familiar with an area. Here, it is not only the knowledge of streets that counts, but also the knowledge of shortcuts, crossings, building numbers or parking spaces. It is also good to become familiar with
with caretakers, doormen or receptionists. These seemingly trivial matters can cut working time by up to half! Once the parcels have been distributed, it is the turn of the courier to collect the parcels from the senders, based on the orders received from the Dispatcher or the Courier Service Team Coordinator. At the end of the day, the courier returns to the branch, where he or she must account for the so-called manifest, money from collection parcels and return documents, before being able to go home.

Of course, this is a very general outline of a working day, in which we assume that everything goes according to plan - all customers have collected their parcels, there were no traffic jams on the streets, and those who collected cash on delivery parcels had their cash calculated on them. As you can easily guess, the work of a courier in Warsaw will look a little different, and the work of a courier in the Warsaw area will look a little different. A lot also depends on whether the courier handles only parcel machines or prefers direct contact with the customer. It is also possible to combine both variants, to work only in the morning or in the afternoon, or at other fixed times of the day. It all depends on individual preferences.
