5 reasons why Parcel Machines are green
5 November 2019
Protecting the environment and countering the effects of global warming are topics that concern each and every one of us. After all, we live on the same planet, we breathe the same air. Courier companies are well aware of this. We commissioned a study on the environmental results of Parcel Post services. The results are impressive!
It all started with the Polish-Norwegian Grass (Green and Sustainable Transport) project, during which researchers from the Maritime Academy in Szczecin together with InPost couriers conducted a survey on Parcel Machines in Poland. A total of 2933 people from all provinces in Poland took part in the online survey. The reports showed that Paczkomaty are one of the most environmentally friendly solutions when it comes to parcel delivery. Find out more!
1. deliveries at your doorstep
InPost parcel machines are an increasingly popular form of parcel delivery. Most points are located in convenient places - on housing estates or near shopping malls. The easy accessibility of modern post office boxes means that we don't have to drive anywhere. It comes as no surprise that as many as 37% of respondents reach Parcel Machines on foot. In this way, we take care of the purity of the air and also embody ecological attitudes! Let's remember that we are part of nature and should take care of our own health. One way of doing this would be through daily physical exercise.
2. on the road, or cheap
An environmental attitude is not limited to stopping the use of cars. While such behaviour would probably be ideal, it seems unrealistic in the modern world. It is therefore about using goods rationally, with a sense of responsibility for the environment. We are therefore pleased that a total of 61% of people using InPost's courier services admit that they only use Parcel Machines to run other errands.
What's more, the survey report reads: "93% of those surveyed do not make up the journey or travel a maximum of 5 km to reach a Parcel Machine." You may think that this is no special information. However, think about the fact that this not inconsiderable percentage of people get in the car and travel an extra 10-15 km round trip. Add to that the frequency of such traffic over the course of a year - say, 10 times. The amount of carbon dioxide emitted into the atmosphere on a 12-month basis would increase significantly.
3. Couriers for clean air
InPost parcel machines are designed to make maximum use of the space available in them. The possibility of locating a large number of parcels in one place contributes to their short delivery time. In addition, senders can collect their parcel at any time. Another resulting benefit is the low cost of the service.
In turn, the AGH University of Science and Technology in Krakow in 2013 showed that by delivering multiple parcels to one location, there is a reduction in carbon dioxide of up to 95%! Such a result agrees with a 2015 study by researchers from Szczecin. According to their calculations, InPost couriers drive 120-150 km less per day than other delivery services.
4 Eco courier trucks
An increasing number of parcels delivered to Parcel Post are being transported in electric cars. The battery in these vehicles ensures that no harmful pollutants escape from the exhaust system. This in turn reduces CO2 emissions in the air. An additional advantage is a quieter engine, reducing noise levels in the city.
5. Sustainability and low-cost courier services
Sustainability aims to meet people's needs while taking care of the natural environment. Parcel machines seem to fit perfectly into this thought, if only by optimising production. InPost continues to modernise its own machines, thereby eliminating environmentally unfriendly processes.
The couriers also encourage us to turn green ideas into action. One such way is to reuse old packaging. After all, cardboard boxes can serve us several times as packaging for a parcel. In this case, all we need to do is remove the previous label. Another example of an eco-friendly attitude is adapting the size of the cardboard box to the item we are sending. Unfortunately, we very often pack a small item in a large box - thus limiting the space for other parcels. This in turn increases the frequency of car trips.
It is worth considering the impact of our daily activities on the environment. The courier companies have taken up this challenge to show us how we can improve the planet with small behaviours. These simple practices will not only improve the environment, but also our wallets. Recycling and using less fuel means cheaper services.
