A campervan holiday is a dream for many people – and with good reason, as this wild adventure has just as many advantages as it does logistical details that need careful consideration. Here are our tips on how to plan the perfect trip, how to prepare, where to go and how to organise the adventure of a lifetime!

Why is a campervan a great idea for a holiday?

A campervan holiday combines the best of relaxed, carefree travel with the comfort offered by modern campervans. In other words, you get to enjoy all the charms of wild camping and travelling wherever you please, whilst also benefiting from the comforts offered by traditional accommodation – comforts you simply won’t find, for example, in a tent.

Travelling in a campervan means no stress about booking accommodation, no rigid schedule and no rushing against the clock in the event of delays; it also means unrestricted contact with nature (you can wake up by a lake at sunrise and have a coffee on the beach) and it’s an opportunity to enjoy the journey itself – not just the destination.

To plan such a trip effectively, you need to list all the steps required to ensure your comfort and safety. So please note the following:

  • the right choice of region and date – whether you’re interested in the city, the mountains or the water, and what the weather forecast is for that time,
  • checking available routes – where the road ends, beyond which you can no longer drive your mobile home,
  • legal aspects – where you can park, where you can camp freely in the wild, what permits or vignettes are required for the destination you’re travelling to, and what the road traffic regulations are in that country,
  • contingency plans – always have a plan B, or even a plan C, because, after all, a campervan is designed to allow you to travel flexibly,
  • choice of vehicle – which campervan model to buy or hire to ensure it meets your expectations.

The Volkswagen California campervan – what does this model have to offer?

The Volkswagen California campervan is one of those models that has already achieved cult status amongst those interested in caravanning and independent travel. This is all because it offers the perfect combination of ease of driving and camping comfort.

The model combines a driving experience similar to that of a passenger car with a miniature house that you can easily arrange inside the vehicle. It is compact and small in size, so driving it does not require any exceptional skills. For this reason, it is suitable for people who are inexperienced in driving large, difficult-to-handle vehicles.

Folding beds, a table, seats, an awning – thanks to the awning, you can create a terrace right next to your campervan, and the canopy will protect you from both the rain and the blazing sun. So you can set up camp anywhere – wherever you fancy watching a picturesque sunrise or sunset.

The Volkswagen California campervan also offers the chance to prepare meals in comfort in its compact kitchen, as well as the option to personalise the space to suit your needs.

Where to go in a campervan? The best routes in Poland and Europe

If you’re interested in routes in Poland, you can check out the following destinations:

  1. The Masuria–Podlasie–Bieszczady Route – on a trip that you can complete in a few days, but which you’re free to extend to several weeks, you’ll be spending time in some of the purest and wildest places in Poland. Connecting with nature, unhurried relaxation, and visiting interesting sites along the way – all in the spirit of ‘slow living’.
  2. The Kraków-Częstochowa Uplands – you can travel along the famous Eagles’ Nests Trail, where you’ll visit castles, spend the night amidst a rugged, rocky landscape, discover a variety of historical sites and regional attractions, and have a go at rock climbing if that’s something you’ve always wanted to do.
  3. The Baltic Coast – much like the R10 route, the famous cycle route stretching over 500 kilometres along the coast. You can plan your journey from Świnoujście to Hel – you’ll visit hundreds of kilometres of beaches, including wild, less popular ones, and do your shopping in bustling tourist towns such as Mielno or Międzyzdroje. The route is suitable for campervan travellers, with plenty of campsites and official accommodation options available.

If you’re planning a trip abroad, take a look at the following destinations:

  1. The Norwegian fjords – a logistically challenging but incredibly fascinating journey through a land brimming with landscapes you won’t find anywhere else. Rugged Nordic nature, good infrastructure, unspoilt wilderness and flexible accommodation options.
  2. Croatia and the Adriatic coast – warm, beautiful, excellent camping facilities – what more could you ask for?
  3. France – a route winding through picturesque vineyards, castles and incredible culture, all in the spirit of ‘slow living’ that the French embrace.

These destinations are, of course, just examples, as a campervan is meant to be driven anywhere there’s a road – Italy is also a popular choice, particularly in mountainous areas such as the Dolomites – ideal for fans of climbing, via ferrata, breathtaking views and high peaks.

What to pack for a campervan trip? A holiday traveller’s essentials

A campervan holiday requires some logistical planning – after all, the aim is to ensure you’re as comfortable as possible. Among the most important things to take with you are certainly:

  • technical equipment – power banks, extension leads, power adaptors, head torches – everything that provides you with electricity and can come to the rescue in the event of unforeseen circumstances,
  • kitchen fittings – the campervan has a kitchen area, so bring along crockery and cutlery – all in mini versions, so you can fit in more items,
  • supplies – there may be times when you can’t go shopping, so it’s a good idea to carry some dry provisions with you, such as instant soups and freeze-dried meals, as well as a supply of drinking water,
  • suitable clothing – make sure you have duvets, sleeping bags or blankets, as well as a change of clothes, a rain jacket and anything else that might come in handy in the event of a sudden change in the weather,
  • safety accessories – a first-aid kit with supplies, a fire extinguisher, various repair kits and multi-tools – in short, an emergency kit,
  • comfort features – a hammock, comfortable cushions, food storage containers, a portable coffee maker and a supply of coffee, as well as, for example, board games, a portable games console or something to help you enjoy your time inside the campervan – for example, if the weather takes a turn for the worse.

A Bluetooth speaker might also come in handy (just make sure there are no noise restrictions where you’re parking), and if you’re keen on sports, it’s a good idea to take along, for example, a badminton set, a skateboard, rollerblades or something else that’s compact.

Holidays with the kids, with friends or on your own? A campervan for everyone

Who you spend your campervan holiday with is entirely up to you. For many people, the advantage of travelling this way is that you can organise spontaneous trips on your own – the campervan gives you complete mobility and flexibility, and it’s also a great option for introverts who value peace and quiet.

A campervan is also a great way to spend time with friends or family – in a way you might not have had the chance to before. You spend the whole trip together, sleep together, and go on adventures together – sounds good, doesn’t it?
