Palletised shipments - Europallet - what do you need to know?
14 December 2019
When we need to send large quantities of goods or bulky items, palletised shipments are ideal. This option is very often used by various online shops or building material manufacturers. Palletised transport is one of the safest ways of delivering non-standard products. What is worth knowing about it? Which items can be transported in this way?
Pallet shipments, a few words about pallet types
Shipping small, standard items is no problem. All you need to do is pack the items in a suitably sized cardboard box, secure the parcel and call for a courier . But what if you have large consignments to transport, such as industrial equipment? The solution is very simple: you have to choose a pallet shipment. From a logistical point of view, a pallet is a platform made of wood for the comfortable and fast transportation of large quantities of non-standard products. Its unique design makes it possible to stack properly packed loads and use useful forklifts. This type of transit definitely makes it easier to cope with heavy and large goods, and the standardised parameters of the pallet are ideally suited to storage areas. What types of pallets do we have?
We distinguish:
- europallets - most commonly used and chosen for their specific dimensions. They are the ideal logistics tool as they have all the necessary approvals and licences required by the European Pallet Association EPAL. They are available under the following designations: EUR, EUR1, EPAL. Europallet dimensions 1200 × 800 × 144 mm. Height of Euro pallet with goods : 970 mm. Maximum load height per pallet : 1800 mm.
Europallet subtypes:
-
EUR 6, EPAL 6 - is smaller than a standard Europallet in terms of length and width, dimensions: 800 × 600 × 144 mm;
-
ISO, EUR 2, EPAL 2 - i.e. industrial pallets of slightly lower quality, but also at a more affordable price, dimensions: 1200 × 1000 × 144 mm;
-
EUR 3, EPAL 3 - 9 planks are stacked lengthways. There are three skids at the bottom, stacked lengthways on the pallet, dimensions: 1000 × 1200 × 144 mm.
We also have pallets for containers, CP pallets (chemical industry), box pallets and specialised pallet extensions. Europallets are most often made of wood, but we can also find good plastic or aluminium equivalents on the market.
-
closed pallets (four-walled, interlocking) - built with blocks connected by planks on each side and in the middle. They are very popular in the UK. They have a specific construction so can only be handled by selected lift vehicles and are not suitable for handling by palletisers;
-
palety Stringer (four-compartment, closed underneath) - characterised by a block construction with lateral reinforcement and a special cut-out for the forks, they can be operated by pallet trucks. They are most commonly used in North America, Africa and Asia;
-
palety Bearer (two-entry, interlocking) - their lifting requires the use of a low-profile vehicle, such as a front truck. They are mainly used in Asia, Africa and North America.
Euro pallets - what can we send?
Palletised shipments are very often used by all kinds of companies and other businesses. It is worth knowing that products weighing more than 31 kg are classified to be transported on pallets. Examples of goods ideally suited for this type of shipment are:
- various machines,
- gardening equipment,
- building materials,
- musical instruments,
- meble,
- domestic appliances and consumer electronics,
- home accessories,
- industrial equipment.
We can place multiple parcels on a single Europallet, thus saving on a single shipment. Euro pallets with dimensions of: 120 × 80 cm. If the goods exceed these, the courier company does not have to accept the package for transport.
Palletised consignments - securing goods prior to transport
No matter what kind of parcel you are sending, you need to secure it properly. This also applies to palletised parcels. What exactly should be done? First of all, the goods should not stick out beyond the borders of the pallet or exceed its maximum height. It will also be a good idea to secure the products with stretch film and cover the corners with specially cut polystyrene moulds. Items should be evenly distributed on the pallet to ensure stability. If they are extremely fragile and delicate, remember to place this information in a visible place on the consignment. The courier will then handle it more carefully. However, it is important to know that it is the sender's responsibility to ensure that the goods are properly protected, so attention should definitely be paid to the packing process. Another important point is that such parcels must not be delivered to locations that are not easily accessible by truck.
