The popularity of Google services makes the integration of applications with them sometimes essential. Special keys are used for this, giving access to useful functions. What is a Google API key and how do you use them? Here are the answers and instructions you should read to make your services more useful to the customer.

What is the Google API?

Developing applications with extensive functionality involves large and not always necessary costs. For this reason, millions of companies around the world benefit from a solution that reduces expenses while allowing them to integrate their own service with the most popular technologies. This is the Application Programming Interface, or API - a set of rules that define how two programmes communicate with each other. One example of the use of this technology is the Google API.

How does Google's API work?

The operation of the Google API can be explained using the example of the most common use of this technology, namely the integration of an external application or website with Google Maps. In the first step, the user requests a service that requires the use of location, such as ordering a food delivery to their home or a taxi to a specified address. The request is passed to Google Maps and then to the Uniform Resource Identifier API web server. From there, it retrieves the resource in the form of maps and passes it back to the external application or website.

Other examples of Google API usage

Google APIs can be used in many ways, and one of them is used in e-commerce. With the Google API, online shops give customers access to the pick-up location function. Simply entering a piece of text in the address panel is enough to find the desired location. It is only up to the shop (as well as carriers, food suppliers and others) to generate the Google Maps API key. In a similar way, you can integrate your own website or application with, among other things, speech-to-text language libraries and cloud services such as Google Docs or Google Sheets file management.

Google API and access to cloud services

However, the API from Google is not just a technology that makes it easier to order a pizza, taxi or parcel. It is also an advanced office tool with which the performance of external applications can be increased. In other words, with the Google Cloud Platform, it is possible to augment memory resources with virtual space on the company's servers. As these are spread across the globe, the risk of losing valuable data is minimal. Companies integrating their task and document management programmes and corporate communicators with the Google Cloud, among others, benefit from this advantage.

How do I generate an API key?

Creating a key is not difficult, as exemplified by adding a location to the map. To do this, go to the Google Maps Platform page and select the 'Get started' button. Then simply create a location, complete the payment details and copy Google's API key. The last steps are to check that the 'Geocoding' option is activated and to implement the API in the administration panel of the website or in your own application. Importantly, the corporation's developers designed a module to add more than one address. This was necessary because of companies with multiple subsidiaries.

Google maps problems - how to solve them?

Integrating Google Maps with your website or app requires payment details, which may change over time. You may need to update your account number or credit card details to get your API key working again. If an amount limit was set when the key was generated, this needs to be changed to restore maps functionality. It can also happen that the error has already occurred when copying the string to the admin panel of the website or application. In this case, it is worth checking the entire sequence of letters and numbers carefully.

Google API limits - is there a limit to the calls?

Google has introduced a restriction on the use of the API due to the risk of automated processes that may indicate an error or an attack by cybercriminals. In either case, exceeding the daily number of requests increases the risk of a site or application being blocked. The limit can be partially controlled by logging into Google Workspace as an administrator. In the "Project" tab, find the "Administration", "Limits" and "Edit limits" sections, respectively. Finally, it remains to select 'Submit request'. Within about two working days, the call limitation may be lifted, although Google stipulates that this does not always happen.

What are the benefits of using Google's API?

Among the interfaces of this type, the solution from Google is one of the most important. The reason for this is the popularity of the company's services. With more than one billion users of the Android mobile operating system, many of the US company's applications dominate other similar services. For this reason, external service providers integrate their programmes with those of Google. In this way, they supplement the functionality with the search giant's proven and constantly improving technologies.
